Poonam Devi is a 34-35 year old woman living in Boja Patel Nagar, Ghaziabad, who has made history by becoming the first woman motor mechanic in the district. Originally from Khaga, Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh, she moved to Ghaziabad in 2014 with her family. For the past two and a half years, she has been working hard as a motor mechanic to support her family, starting her day at 8 in the morning and servicing vehicles throughout the day.
Despite the challenges of working in a male-dominated profession, Poonam Devi persevered, earning up to 1000 rupees per day. But her life took a sudden turn when, on March 21, 2022, someone set fire to her shop. All of her tools and equipment were destroyed, leaving her devastated and without a means of livelihood.
But Poonam Devi refused to give up. Despite the trauma of the incident, she resumed work again under a rainbow umbrella just a few meters away from the PWD guest house in Ghaziabad. She worked tirelessly, servicing vehicles amidst the clamor of the busy GT Road.
The community also rallied around her, showing their support and kindness in many ways. A doctor gave her a tool kit worth Rs. 35,000, urging her to stop crying and resume her work. Others helped with small amounts of money, food, and essential items, and even strangers from social media sent her money when her account number was shared online.
Through the support of her community and her own determination, Poonam Devi rose above the ashes of the fire and started dreaming again. Her rainbow dreams are a symbol of hope and resilience, inspiring many others who face adversity to keep moving forward with courage and determination.
