NATO: Turkey has given a green signal to Sweden to join NATO. This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jan Stoltenberg on Monday. He said- Turkish President Erdogan has agreed to present Sweden’s proposal to join NATO in his National Assembly. We hope it will pass soon. However, no date has been announced for this.
Stoltenberg met the leaders of Sweden and Turkey on Monday ahead of a NATO summit in the Lithuanian city of Vilnius. After this, in a joint statement, Sweden’s Prime Minister Christerson said – This is a good day for Sweden.
In exchange for NATO membership, Sweden would support Turkey’s efforts to join the European Union. In fact, Erdogan had said Sweden’s membership that the European Union (EU) should make them a part of Sweden before Turkey’s parliament approves Sweden’s NATO claim.
Earlier, on Thursday, July 6, the chief of staff of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that his country no longer has any objection to Sweden joining NATO.
Now US President Joe Biden has also welcomed Turkey’s decision. Other NATO countries, including the US, have been trying to persuade Turkey to approve Sweden’s membership for several months.
