Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan got a big relief from the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday (March 7) in the Toshakhana case. His arrest warrant has been stayed by the High Court till March 13. The court has ordered PTI Chief Khan to appear in the lower court before March 13.
Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday (March 6) challenged in the Islamabad High Court the arrest warrant issued against Khan for not appearing in the Islamabad District and Sessions Court. The High Court has given relief to Khan in this matter.
What is the matter?
Khan (70) is accused of buying gifts received during his tenure as prime minister from the Toshakhana at throwaway prices and selling them for profit. An Islamabad Sessions Court judge had issued an arrest warrant against Khan on February 28 and adjourned the hearing till March 7. On 5 March, a team of Islamabad police took the court summons to Khan’s Lahore residence, however the police had to return empty-handed. , ,
What did the Election Commission say?
The counsel for the Election Commission of Pakistan requested that the hearing be adjourned till 9 March, which was supported by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha, who said that Khan would have to appear at the Islamabad High Court on that date.
Ranjha reiterated, “Imran Khan will definitely appear before the Islamabad High Court on March 9.” Justice Zafar Iqbal then remarked that in other words Imran Khan would not be present in the sessions court even on March 9. Ranjha requested the court to take action against Khan. He asked whether such relief is given to a common citizen by appearing in the court.
What did Imran Khan’s lawyer say?
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s lawyer Sher Afzal Marwat appeared in the court and said that 70-year-old Khan was unwell after the Wazirabad attack and was unable to appear. He requested for a date next week and said that Khan would give the ‘power of attorney’ in a day or two.
