An Armenian army captain has been arrested on charges of espionage. This army captain was passing intelligence about military equipment purchased from India to another country, after which the National Security Service arrested him. The Army Captain was hired by a foreign agency in 2021 and since then he is engaged in this intelligence mission.
According to the report of Armenia’s news agency NewsAM, in April-May 2021, the Army Captain of Armenia sent some intelligence information of the army to a foreign agency, which also had information about the military weapon ‘Swati’ purchased from India. He was also given lump sum money twice for this espionage.
The Weapon Locating Radar ‘Swati’ has been developed by the Electronics and Radar Establishment of DRDO. This radar detects the exact position of mortars, rockets and shells. Swati also guides the artillery gun attached to the radar to destroy the weapons.
Sources say that the date of this incident indicates that the Army Captain had leaked the information of the Weapon Locating Radar Swati received from India to Armenia.
This is not the first time Armenia has arrested its own officials on charges of espionage. Earlier in November 2022, the Armenia Army arrested one of its Major rank officers on charges of espionage. Earlier in February 2022, a module was also busted in which 19 army personnel were spying for a foreign agency.
On 27 September 2020, war broke out in Azerbaijan and Armenia. Later the war stopped after the ceasefire, but there have been border skirmishes between the two countries in two years.
