Israel: In Israel’s Parliament (Knesset), a female MP was stopped from giving a speech just because she had a newborn daughter in her arms. Although, the reason for this was the rules of the Parliament, but now this incident has given rise to a new debate.
The incident is on Tuesday and the name of the female MP is Sherin Heskal. According to Deputy Speaker Uriel Busso, only the MP can stand on the dais of Parliament, no one else should be with him. Due to this rule, Sherin could not put her point in front of the Parliament.
Shereen is an MP from the National Unity Party. This party is in opposition. Shereen wanted to introduce a bill and had already given notice for the same. On Tuesday, Deputy Speaker Uriel Busso called his name for the speech.
When Sherin reached the podium to the right of the speaker’s chair, a cloth folder or sling was hanging around her neck and Sherin’s young daughter was in it.
However, as Sherin reached the podium, Busso stopped her from speaking. When the woman MP asked the reason for this, the deputy speaker said – According to the rules of the Parliament, only the MP has the right to stand on the dais and you have a daughter with you.
Shereen said in reply- Sir, I had made the girl sit in the stroller, but she was very small so she started crying loudly. So I had no option. That’s why he was brought here in a sling.
After listening to Shereen, the deputy speaker consulted Speaker Amir Ohna and the legal advisers of the parliament. After this told Shereen that the rules of Parliament cannot be compromised. Speaker Ohna said- I apologize to you, but the rule is the same for all.
Sherin got a little angry about this. Said- How is it possible that you stop the MP from presenting the bill under the guise of any rule? After all, children are a part of us. There are countless women who are also mothers and perform their work or duty with full responsibility.
