India-Libya: Travel agents had taken them to Libya by luring them with a job in Italy. Most of the people released from jail are from Punjab and Haryana. Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Vikramjit Singh Sahni has told on social media platform X that travel agents have trapped all these people on the pretext of providing them good jobs in Europe.

On June 13, Libya released the hostage Indians but kept them in Tripoli jail on charges of illegally entering the country. India then obtained consular access to all 17 Indians through legal recourse and persuaded the Libyan authorities to release them.
The Embassy took care of every need of the Indians while they were stranded in Libya. This includes essential food, medicine, and clothing, as they did not have passports. He was issued an emergency certificate so that he could return to India. The Indian Embassy also arranged air tickets for all of them.
