Libya: Storm Daniel in the Mediterranean Sea has caused devastation in Libya. There is a possibility of thousands of people dying due to the floods caused by the storm in the country. More than 1,000 bodies have been recovered from floods in the eastern Libyan city of Derna, a minister in the eastern Libyan administration said on Tuesday (Sept 12). He said that the death toll could be much higher.
“I just returned from Derna. This flood is very devastating. There are bodies everywhere in the sea, in the valleys, under the buildings,” Hichem Chakiot, civil aviation minister and emergency committee member, told Reuters by phone. “The number of bodies recovered in Derna exceeds 1,000,” he said.
Hichem Chakiyot fears that the death toll from the floods will indeed be very high. He said that 25 percent of the city has disappeared, and many buildings in it have collapsed. However, officials said on Monday that at least 2,000 people had died in the floods.
Officials further said that thousands of people are missing in the floods. He said that due to the breach of the dam above the city, many areas have been washed away. A video shared on Facebook showed dozens of bodies covered in blankets on a sidewalk in the city of Derna.
