Netherlands: A major accident has come to light in the Netherlands on Wednesday. A cargo ship carrying 3,000 cars suddenly caught fire off the coast of the Netherlands, killing one person on board, according to news agency Reuters. While many others have been injured.
The Coast Guard said that a fire broke out on Tuesday night on a ship named ‘Fremantle Highway’, which was going from Germany to Egypt. Several crew members jumped overboard immediately after the fire broke out. The Netherlands Coast Guard told that the rescuers who reached the spot also tried to control the fire on the ship.
Edwin Versteeg, a spokesman for the Netherlands’ Department of Waterways and Public Works, said the fire was definitely not under control. It is becoming very difficult to extinguish it. The main reason for the fire on it is the vehicles on the ship.
The coastguard said on its website that the cause of the fire was not yet known, but a coastguard spokesman told news agency Reuters that the fire had started near an electric car. According to the Netherlands Navy, the ship is tilting and the possibility of its sinking has increased further.
According to Willard Molenaar of the Royal Dutch Rescue Company, he was the first to arrive at the scene after the fire was reported. He told that the fire spread so fast that seven crew members jumped into the water. Molenaar said some people were injured after jumping too low into the water, while one crew member died of burns.
