The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin. In this, Putin has been accused of being responsible for war crimes committed in Ukraine. However, Russia has repeatedly denied allegations that its military committed atrocities during its year-long invasion of Ukraine.
In its first warrant for Ukraine, the ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Putin on suspicion of illegal deportation of children and illegal transfer of people from the territory of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.
Russia kept quiet on warrant
Russia did not immediately respond to the ICC’s arrest warrant. However, the apprehension of issuing warrant was already being expressed. In addition, the court issued a warrant against Russia’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, on similar charges.
ICC prosecutor Karim Khan launched an investigation into possible war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Ukraine a year ago. He emphasized during four visits to Ukraine that Russian forces are committing alleged crimes against children and targeting civilian infrastructure.
