The Wadia Institute had found in its report that the sliding of the moraine mountain is fixed after a certain time. However, indiscriminate explosions and haphazard construction have only increased its pace. At the same time, its scientists had said that below the city of Joshimath, there is Dhauli Ganga on one side and Alaknanda river on the other side. The erosion of the mountain by both the rivers has also weakened the mountain.

The 16 kilometer long tunnel of NTPC’s hydroelectric project is passing under Joshimath. This tunnel is closed after debris entered. Scientists say that the pressure created by gas formation in the tunnel is destabilizing the soil. Due to this the land is sinking.
When the situation worsened, the government had ordered the closure of NTPC’s hydel project and the tunnel work of Char Dham All Weather Road (Helang-Marwari Bypass), but where the work is stopped on paper, big machines continue to dig mountains on the spot. .
Shankaracharya Jagadguru Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati of Jyotishpeeth has filed a PIL in the Supreme Court. He said- For the last one year there were signs of land subsidence. The government did not pay attention to this.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached Joshimath on Saturday. On Friday, he ordered to vacate the danger zone immediately and set up a rehabilitation center for the affected families at a safe place.
What will be done now to stop landslides in Uttarakhand?
Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana sent the team to Joshimath. He said that after consulting the structural engineer, he has directed the officials to take immediate security measures. District Information Officer Ravindra Negi told that the District Magistrate has also asked the team to prepare a drainage system plan for Joshimath. Apart from this, to stop the erosion of Alaknanda river, it has also been asked to prepare a proposal to build a security wall between Marwari bridge and Vishnuprayag at the foothills of Joshimath.
Secretary, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department of Uttarakhand, Dr. Ranjit Sinha said that after completing the works related to sewer system in the city, every house in the area will be connected to the sewer line. The tender will be floated on January 20 for its detailed project report. Geo-technical study will also be done while preparing this report.
