More than 59 migrants were killed while 80 were rescued after an overcrowded ship capsized in Italy’s Calabria region. These include 28 Pakistanis. A news agency said the ship sank after hitting rocks during bad weather. According to the BBC, the accident happened when the ship was trying to land near the coastal town of Crotone, with more than 100 people on board. The Coast Guard said in a statement that 43 bodies had been found on the beach.
Local news agencies reported that the crashed ship had passengers from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia. Italian authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation on land and at sea. According to the report, every year migrants cross the border from Africa to Italy to escape conflict and poverty.
