India abstained from voting at the UN General Assembly on a resolution seeking the opinion of the International Court of Justice on the legal consequences of Israel’s “long-term occupation” of Palestinian territories. The UN General Assembly voted on Friday on a draft resolution titled “Israeli Activities Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People in the Palestinian Occupied Territories, including East Jerusalem”.
87 votes were in favor of the proposal, while 26 votes were cast against it. 53 members including India abstained during the voting. The resolution requests the International Court of Justice, the UN’s highest judicial body, to advise on the issue of “the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people by Israel’s occupation, settlement and invasion of Palestinian territory since 1967”. What could be the consequences of violation. The US and Israel voted against the draft resolution, while Brazil, Japan, Myanmar and France abstained.
